English Activities (2022-2023)

English Speaking Days

What an eye-opening English Speaking Day! Knowing English is the doorway to the entire English-speaking world. Junior students learned about the landmarks and signature dishes of some English-speaking countries, while senior students learned several amazing facts about global English. For example, did you know that 1.85 billion people speak English today?!

Tip: Keep learning English to open up more opportunities for yourself!

Speech Festival – Success in Solo Verse and Public Speaking

The Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival (HKSSF) is a cherished and significant component of our school’s English-speaking activities. For the Solo Verse category this year, the chosen poems were a delightful blend of humour, vivid imagery, and thought-provoking ideas. To perfect their skills in delivering the poetry, entrants attended daily training sessions held by our part-time NET Mr Gavin Colley. All the effort put forth by our students paid off eventually, with the majority of them awarded Merit. We extend our special congratulations to William Kuiper 4A (11), who secured the First Runner-up position with his excellent rendition of ‘The Vikings’.

The highlight of this year’s HKSSF is the remarkable debut made by our Public Speaking Team. All seven members participated in the Public Speaking Solo category and received the Certificate of Merit. Our students were lauded for their exceptional scriptwriting, which incorporated thorough research, personal anecdotes, and data. Additionally, their effective use of facial expressions, vocal dynamics, and gestures contributed to their excellent delivery, which was also commended by the adjudicators. Two of our team members even won awards – 3B (16) Rai Protsahan was crowned the Champion with an impressive 88 marks, and William Kuiper 4A (11) placed Second Runner-up with 87 marks. We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the entire team for their outstanding performance, which would not have been possible without everyone’s hard work and time invested in preparing and delivering their speeches. A special thank you also goes to Ms Joey Lai, Mr Jenkin Leung, and Ms Kwan Li for their invaluable guidance in scriptwriting and presentation training. We look forward to seeing our Public Speaking Team grow and excel in future competitions.

Drama Show by Dove Tales Theatre Company – Beauty and the Beast

Our school hall was transformed into a magical wonderland on May 19, 2023, filled with enchanting characters and captivating drama when Dove Tales Theatre Company presented their production of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ to our Form 1 and 2 students. The classic fairytale came to life in an unforgettable way, with catchy original tunes and plenty of audience interaction.

The production was a retelling of the classic fairytale, following the story of Prince Christian, who was turned into a horrible beast by the wicked queen's spell. The only way to break the spell was if someone fell in love with the beast and said the magic words. Beauty, a beautiful girl living in the forest, becomes friends with the beast and tries to break the spell. However, the evil queen keeps trying to thwart their attempt.

Throughout the play, the actors broke the fourth wall and interacted with students, asking them for suggestions on their course of action. Two lucky students from Class 1E, Valentino Wong and Joe Wong, even got to take part in the production as minions of the wicked queen!

After the show, the cast and crew set aside time to take pictures and hold a lively Q&A session. The actor who played the Beast led the audience, encouraging them to ask questions and engage with the performers. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to interact with professional actors and learn more about drama production.

We extend a huge thank you to the incredible team from Dove Tales Theatre Company for bringing this delightful play to our school. It was a cheerful and heartwarming experience that left our students feeling uplifted and inspired. Our students surely look forward to seeing more productions like this in the future!
